Although paper is much more affordable compared to EMR systems and its maintenance, the expensive part of using the old method is its storage. According to medical experts, it is a standard in the US as well as in other countries that a medical record should be stored for 7 years. Because of this, many larger healthcare institutions may need additional storage spaces to store all their medical records, which can be costly.
Digital records produced by EMR systems, on the other hand, can be easily stored in a digital storage space, such as a Hard Disk Drive, which can be easily stored within the institution’s premises.
